Tomb of Ala al-Din Khalji (Mission for Indian History and Archaeology)New Delhi, India
1959-62 Survey
Known as the Tomb of `Alā'al-Dīn Khaljī. Located in the northeast end of Mihrawlī village, southwest of Quṭb Mīnār. Grid ref. F-12
This tomb forms the south part of the group of buildings called the `Alā'al-Dīn madrasa, located southwest of Quṭb Mīnār. It is a building with a square plan, a miḥrāb on the west and entrances on the other three sides. Currently there is no dome, and the walls consist of exposed plaster and crushed stones, showing signs of heavy restoration in recent times. Inside, there are traces of one tomb in the center. It appears there was a small adjoining room to the north, of which the foundation and part of the wall surfaces remain. Beyond the corridors on the east and west, there are buildings with rectangular plans (long on the north-south axis), no ceilings, and unfinished walls. It is not known whether this tomb was never finished (and then abandoned) or whether it was destroyed in later years, but the former explanation is more likely. There is hardly any historical evidence that proves this tomb to be that of `Alā'al-Dīn Muhammad of the Khaljī Dynasty, as tradition indicates. Period I.
2015-18 Survey
This is said to be the tomb of Ala ad-Din Khalji and is located in the southwest part of M1. It is being restored as part of the M1 complex. The only difference from the 1959-62 photos is that the walls have been fortified with filler material to prevent stones from falling out.
(Paragraph 2 for the 2015-18 Survey - Translated Description with Google Translator)
[Plan] There is a central tomb chamber measuring approximately 14m square (9.4m inside diameter according to Monuments of Delhi) and long rectangular rooms running north-south on both the east and west sides, and although the orientation is reversed, the plan configuration is similar to that of T3. The central tomb chamber has a mihrab on the west side and opens to the east, south, and north. The transitional part has collapsed and is unknown. There are traces of a protruding part narrower than the width of the tomb chamber adjacent to the north side, and it is presumed that there was an iwan facing north. There is also a corridor about 2m wide between the side chambers and the central tomb chamber, each of which is independent, and the side chambers each have three entrances, one on the north and south side and on the corridor side. There are L-shaped corridors on the south and west sides of the whole, and the connection with O23 is clear.
