Small Fort to the East of Adilabad (Mission for Indian History and Archaeology)
New Delhi, India

1959-62 Survey

Called the Small Fort East of ‘Ādilābād. Located approximately 800 m east from ‘Ādilābād Fort, on the south side of Quṯb Badarpur Road. Grid ref. K-14

This fort was built on a natural rock formation. It is significantly smaller than ‘Ādilābād Fort, but it is presumed to have been built around the same period. Inside the fort, there are wall surfaces, partial arches, and battlement capstones remaining. Contemporary historical sources do not mention this small fort at all, but in later years, it became known as the Fort of Dhobī ("washerman") or the Fort of Nā’ī ("Barber"). The origin of these popular names is not clear. Period II.

2015-18 Survey

This fort was found to be extant. Located 500m east of O3, it is a rectangle measuring 43m in the east-west direction and 40m in the north-south, with two concave corners (the northeast corner is octagonal in shape, and the southwest corner is rectangular). In the south part of the east side, there is a rectangular gate, and a wall surrounds the southeast section. The walls of the gate are thick, and it is thought it was originally a domed structure supported by walls. Though this is a fort, it is different in nature from O1, O2, and O3, which are all cities enclosing palace areas.

(Paragraph 2nd from the 2015-18 Survey is translated using Google Translate)

[Remains believed to be tombs] Inside the fortress, there are remains of an octagonal foundation stone about 8m across on the north side, and a rectangular platform surrounding the foundation stone can be confirmed. As a similar example, while octagonal tombs were rare until the early Tughluq dynasty in Delhi (around 1320), the foundation part of T1 is octagonal, and the octagonal tombs added to the Borj in the fortress at T7 and T6 have a corridor, which is the prototype of T76. There are also octagonal tomb buildings T92-96 which are believed to date to the Middle Sultanate period (1320-1413).
