Ali Behdad is John Charles Hillis Professor of Literature, Professor of English and Comparative Literature, and the Director of the Center for Near Eastern Studies at UCLA. He has published widely on issues of Orientalism and the history of photography in the Middle East. His publications include Belated Travelers: Orientalism in the Age of Colonial Dissolution, A Forgetful Nation: On Immigration and Cultural Identity in the United States, and Camera Orientalis: Reflections on Photography of the Middle East. He is also the co-editor of A Companion to Comparative Literature (Blackwell, 2011) and Photography’s Orientalism: New Essays on Colonial Representation (Getty Research Institute, 2013). His primary interests are: Postcolonial Literature and Theory; Literary and Cultural Theory; European Representation of the Middle East; Victorian Novel and Travel Literature; US Immigration History; 19th Century Photography of/in the Middle East.
