Harald Hauptmann is Professor Emeritus of Prehistoric and Near Eastern Archaeology at the University
of Heidelberg and former director of the German Archaeological Institute at Istanbul. Between 1968 and
2003, he has conducted several excavations in eastern and south-eastern Turkey covering the periods from Early Neolithic to the Middle Ages. Since 1989, he is the head of the research project "Rock Carvings and Inscriptions along the Karakoram Highway" at the Heidelberg Academy of Humanities and Science, and leads the annual field research of a Pak-German archaeological mission to the Northern Areas of Pakistan. He is the editor of several monographs on the archaeology of the Balkans, Greece and the Turkish Euphrates region. The results of the research in the Northern Areas have been published
in two series: Antiquities of Northern Pakistan,vols. 1-5, 1989-2004, and Materials for the Archaeology of the Northern Regions of Pakistan, vols. 1-7, 1994-2005.
