Scholar and professor of Islamic art and architecture. Among other interests, he is known especially for his work on medieval Islamic objects in European church treasuries, and oliphants (carved ivory horns). As of May 2020: Riggio Professor of Arts of Islam at Columbia University (since 2014). Appointed 24th Director of the American Academy in Rome in 2020.
