Abdullah Ansari Shrine Complex Restoration

Herat Elite Burials: An Endangered Heritage

Type
book
Year
2013

This record of historic tombstones, representing a fine heritage of Taimuri and later carved stone work in and around Gazur Gah - perhaps the greatest concentration of such work anywhere - was started as a result of the Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC) intervention to consolidate the architectural fabric of the ‘Abdullah Ansari Shrine and thus to secure its future. The surveying of tombs in the shrine courtyard was carried out in 2007/8 by AKTC conservation architects, who ensured the correct and detailed mapping and numbering of tombs and cenotaphs. For this publication, the map has been completed by numbering the rooms and domed tomb-chambers on the basis of Lisa Golombek’s useful monograph on the shrine (1968).
