The Center for Planning and Architectural Studies was assigned to prepare proposals for a project to develop the area surrounding the Holy Mosque in view of all related development projects. The detailed studies included the historical development of the area with attention to its heritage and urban aspects, and the possibility to link the past with the present and the future without harming the Islamic concept. These studies offered many alternatives of architectural design and planning suited to the nature of the place in order to determine the most appropriate plan, and put a final concept forward for the comprehensive redevelopment of the region.
