This book records the proceedings of the third in a series of regional seminars within the general title "Exploring Architecture in the Islamic World". This seminar was held in Malta in 1989. Architectural criticism ultimately can only flourish in a climate of intellectual freedom, a situation which sadly does not exist everywhere in the developed or the developing world. There was evidence of a serious lack of critical discourse in many societies. Paradoxically this also gave sustenance to those who may have felt that they were alone in facing this dilemma. This shared experience was for some the most valuable outcome of the seminar. Source: Foreword by Robert Powell
