This programme was designed to improve Zabid’s economy through implementing labour-intensive projects providing work opportunities for local inhabitants to enable them to better restore and preserve their own city. The citadel square covers of an area of 17,000 m2 and is surrounded by important buildings restored over the last few years. The centre of the square is a gathering point and is shaped in a semi-circle with its paving in the direction of Makkah. A main platform was built and attached to the main building of the citadel to be used for cultural events. Where necessary, walls were re-bricked and the square repaved and, after investigation, the outer citadels wall areas were upgraded.
