Development of Pedestrian Network and Neighborhood
Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
This city-wide scheme sets out to restore the social cohesion destroyed by rapid modernisation. It breaks down the harsh urban environment with neighbourhood-scale interventions to humanise the city. 100 parks of various sizes, 238km of widened and landscaped sidewalks plus cultural and recreational institutions all work together to create a symbiotic relationship between the city and its residents. With an emphasis on pedestrian traffic, the scheme acknowledges the climate and social context, integrating district amenities and transport and developing more liveable communities. The project was achieved through public-private partnership and a multi-disciplinary approach and enables Riyadh to meet its municipal responsibilities.
