Emergency NGO Pediatric Clinic
Nyala, Sudan

Situated in Nyala, capital of South Darfur, the Emergency NGO Pediatric Clinic combines technological simplicity with energy efficiency to adapt to environnemental conditions. The hospital is designed in line with the principles of Arabic Housing. In complete harmony with local traditional building systems, the roof is made with lowered brick tiles vaults called jagharsch. The clinic is protected from direct sunlight by a false metal roof which creates a ventilated air chamber. Woven bamboo screens are used to protect corridors. The use of thick bricks with a ventilated air chamber in between, combined with reduces apertures and good natural and forced ventilation, form the basis of the 'air machine' which reduces temperatures by about 10°C.
