In 2003, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) decided that Kurdistan should have its own gateway to the world in Erbil, and the re-building of an old military airfield began in the start of July 2003.The new state-of-the-art terminal, completed in 2010, is characterised by its monumental lightweight roof that unifies on a single floor level land arrival, check-in counters, security controls and boarding gates. This architectural solution helps orientation inside the airport and visual contact with the outside and enhances the experience of travelling.
