Süleyman I was the tenth Ottoman sultan, and the most celebrated. He is called "Kanuni" (law maker) in the Turkish tradition because of his role in formulating a code of secular law for the Ottoman state. He is also celebrated as an incredible patron of the arts. He commissioned dozens of buildings and civil engineering projects across the empire, most executed through the guiding hand of his chief architect Sinan. Due to the splendor of his court, he earned the nickname "Süleyman the Magnificent" in Europe.
