Shihab al-Din ibn Muhammad, who took the regnal title Ahmad Shah I, was Sultan of Gujarat from 1411 to 1442/814-846 AH. Although his grandfather Muzaffar Khan was the first to claim the royal title of Sultan, Ahmad Shah is responsible for consolidating power for his family and Islam in Gujarat. He also founded the city of Ahmedabad, now the largest city and cultural capital of Gujarat, constructing a fortress, city walls, a congregational mosque, and numerous other monuments therein.
