This book comprises a collection of historical and archaeological studies presented during the archaeological week celebrating the opening of the Museum of Historical Damascus. The researches, in which a number of experts participated, focus on the architecture, urbanisation, and social and economic aspects of Damascus during the nineteenth century.
The architectural aspects of Damascus are dealt with from several perspectives, starting with the old and modern Damascene house. It then moves on to subjects more broadly relating to the city structure, its urban functions and architectural features. The book also looks at schools built before the Ottoman period as well as at sources of water and the irrigation canals branching out from the Barada River. The studies on the social and economic aspects are based on analysis of folklore and handicrafts. In addition to this, the work explores the recollections of a Damascene eyewitness, and then takes as a sample a Damascene neighbourhood.
In general, the book succeeds in shedding light on the above aspects relating to Damascus. While these studies are brief, they are distinguished by their quality and for broaching topics deserving of further in-depth academic research as well as their discussion of debates relevant to the present. The work suits a wide breadth of specialised readers interested in the history of Damascus, providing them with material for further research and investigation.
This book serves as an excellent basis for more in-depth studies relating to the history of Damascus and its contemporary reverberations.
