ABSTRACT

City of Sivas during Ottoman Times: Articles

Osmanlılar Dönemi Sivas Şehri: Makaleler

This book is part of a series titled “Sivas: 100 Essential Works” published by the Municipality of Sivas. The present volume is made up of articles and presentations on Sivas created by Ömer Demirel. According to the author, these works will be a valuable resource both for Ottoman urban historians and the members of the general public interested in learning about the city of Sivas.

The book starts with an analysis of Sivas’ physical outlook and socio-cultural works of art built during the Ottoman period. Following this, the economic life of the city is described by discussing the economic geography of the city including the bazaar, the hamam (Turkish bath), the han (inn) and the bedesten (covered bazaar). In addition to a general discussion of the city’s social and economic institutions, some institutions and monuments such as Mevlevihane dervish lodge, Ahi Zaviye dervish lodge and Fountains and Küçük Minare neighbourhood are described in detail.

The Mongol invasion, which the author calls the Timur incident, is also discussed since it was a turning point in the history of Sivas which caused great physical, economic, cultural and political destruction.

Since the book is made up of independent articles, all the tables, maps and plans are presented within the respective articles and not at the end of the volume. The visual materials inserted in each article make the subject matter easier to understand. The only exception is with photographs, which are placed at the end of the book.

With its detailed discussion and analysis the book proves to be a valuable resource for researchers working on Ottoman Sivas. For the non-expert readers the detailed academic narrative might be too heavy.
