At the end of April, 711/92 AH, the army of Tariq ibn Ziyad (طارق بن زياد) landed in Gibraltar, launching the Islamic conquest of the Iberian peninsula. The area remained under Muslim control until 1462, with the exception of a brief period between 1309-1333 when it was captured by Castille.
