Construction on the Hejaz Railway connecting <a href="http://archnet.org/sites/8225" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Damascus</a> to <a href="https://www.archnet.org/sites/14910" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Medina</a> started in 1900 under the Ottoman Sultan Abdul Hamid II. The al-'Ula station was toward the end of the line.&nbsp;It was abandoned when the line stopped working in 1920. The station house, fortifications, windmill, and water tower are still on the site, as are cars of derelict trains.&nbsp;
