The Centre, now replicated at eight sites, was the result of a research project focused on understanding the impact of space in early childhood development and the interface between the natural and socio-economic environment in local communities, who can all use the facility which acts as an “added educator”. A stimulation room, oriented in response to the prevailing wind and rain, is connected with a large front porch facing the main path leading to the village. The open demonstration kitchen and garden are located directly opposite, and the compost production and latrines are placed on the side, next to the playground. The workforce was gender-balanced and materials locally sourced. The rainwater harvesting system and hand washing taps complete the environmental response of the project.
