Algiers old town, the Casbah, was known as "La Blanche" because of the original white colour the Mediterranean port was painted in the past. Declared a World Heritage Site in 1992, it became a dangerous place during the "black decade" of the 1990s, and remains in a poor state. Writing inspiring messages seemed a way to brighten the walls and the lives of the inhabitants. Eight interventions on different walls were undertaken in Arabic with the meanings: We all share the same sun; Enjoy each moment; Light; Beauty; Honesty; Love; Dignity; and, We are Light. Calligraphy was chalked onto the walls and the original colour was left inside, while the rest of the wall was painted white.
