The airstrikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs in July 2006 left 1,232 buildings, or 30,000 residential and commercial units, damaged or completely destroyed. The Waad Advisory Board, set up to implement the reconstruction of the area, included architects, urban designers and planners. They divided the project area into 24 sectors, within which the damaged fabric was completely reconstructed, including infrastructural amendments, repairs to roads and walkways, the construction of parks, car parks, and commercial spaces. A total of 271 buildings of different heights amounting to 4,000 residential and 1,800 commercial spaces were reconstructed within a short timeframe, with residents consulted throughout the process.
