Evliya Çelebi describes this place as follows: It is called Çengelköy because when Fatih Sultan Mehmed conquered the city of Istanbul, there were still hooks left at this location from the time of Yanko bin Madyan. The central city is by the sea. Its back is mountainous with gardens, and vineyards like a Persian grove similar to irem gardens. Most of its citizens are non-Muslim Greeks. Though there are few Muslims, the village has perfect palaces of sultans and viziers.
