The site’s existing palm trees were instrumental in the design of this family house and small graphic design studio. Most were retained, with some penetrating the interiors - one even rising through the dining table. They inspired the adoption of a modern version of the traditional Indonesian stilt-house model for the rooms, which are grouped in small, scattered blocks linked by elevated terraces, with pool and landscaped yard beneath. Supporting columns are similar in thickness to the trees, and their raw concrete echoes the bark’s colour and texture, as do the vertical board-formed concrete façades. Ironwood lattices wrap the elevated terraces. Interior walls are lined with repurposed light pine. The raised level of the main accommodation enhances privacy and facilitates airflow.
