Kramat Jati House
Jakarta, Indonesia

Designed for a family with two married children, these three adjoining houses share a semi-basement (with service area and garage) and garden (with swimming pool). Their combined façade appears massive and private. Identical ground floors incorporate living room, bedroom, kitchen and dining room. Above, the houses’ programmes vary according to the occupants’ needs and hobbies, accommodating workroom, dance room and fitness room respectively. A sense of spaciousness is obtained through Ujung Padang marble flooring that extends from living rooms to terraces, and large openings towards the garden. Slivers of local brick are applied to some of the concrete column-and-beam structure’s walls and ceilings, minimising cost and maintenance. Despite the modern design, the roof is slanted, to suit the tropical climate.
