Quba Boulevard Development
Medina, Saudi Arabia

The project is 3-kilometre corridor linking the Prophet’s Mosque and Quba Mosque; this first phase is a stretch of 600 metres, and the remaining phases will be completed in 2019. Vehicular traffic has been rerouted so that the street is now a stone-paved pedestrian thoroughfare; landscaping has been introduced to recall the oasis around which Medina was founded, and night-time lighting and street furniture were installed. An important component of the project is a year-round programme of public social and cultural events for local residents and for visitors. The development was undertaken in conjunction with merchants who are now upgrading their shops and facilities along the boulevard.
