Al Jabal Primary School
Arab al Jahalin, Palestine

This school serves 123 students of the Jahalin Bedouin community who were relocated from their villages by the Israeli Authority to this peripheral former village, cut off from East Jerusalem by the Separation Barrier. The project is a reconstruction of the existing Al Jabal school, which was left in terrible condition. The construction makes use of metal gabions filled with local stone in a yellow ochre colour typical of the area, which blends well with the features of the landscape. The technique of construction was favoured by the local community for its strength and stability, and by the architects for its environmental comfort and the availability of building materials.
