In the north of Izmir, on the Aegean coast, this olive oil mill was built to provide an organic facility using traditional techniques for olives grown on this family estate. The galvanized steel construction was fabricated in Istanbul and shipped to the site, where it was screwed together and filled with stone, thereby training local labour in new techniques. The building has guest rooms, a shop and the production area, spread across two levels so the olive oil can glide down to the lower level using the weight of gravity instead of a pump. The building has a shifted roof for climatic considerations, and is covered by a distinctive copper shelter.
