Performance Art Centre
Tehran, Iran

An abandoned, half-built set of industrial sheds were transformed into south-east Tehran’s largest centre for professional theatre. After considerable reinforcement of the dilapidated existing structures, clay-tile-clad cubic boxes in various sizes and colours were added: on top of, next to or integrated into one another. They accommodate a 1,000-seat main theatre; four smaller "black box" theatres for experimental performances; a cinema and children’s puppet theatre, each seating 150; two practice rooms; a vast lobby space for conferences and festivals; a theatre-focused library; and restaurant and service areas. A depression in the site was used to create stepped platforms around the rear courtyard for an open-air amphitheatre. The centre has given a major social and cultural boost to a disadvantaged neighbourhood.
