<p>The chapel interior contains a nave and apse that are separated by an iconostasis that serves as an altar screen. During the renovations at the end of the 19th-century a choir gallery was added at the west end of the chapel that is reached by a wooden staircase. The nave has a semi-circular barrel-vaulted wooden ceiling that is separated from the rafters by purlins.</p>
<p>The eastern end of the chapel apse is constructed as a polygonal form with shorter timbers joined together using dovetailed interlocking joints. The steps leading to the side (north) entrance to the nave can be seen. The wooden shingles appear to be oak and the roof form has a variable pitch to extend the roof beyond the walls. A sloped fascia covers the extended structure.</p>
<p>The chapel's oak base member originally rested on the ground until a stone base was added during the last decade of the 19th century. The entry, on the west end of the chapel, is reached by ascending stone steps. The roof structure is constructed by a framework of rafters. The roof cap member does not serve as a ridge beam. The present windows are larger than the original windows according to records.</p>
<p>The soffit between the roof overhang and walls is formed using specially shaped planks that are supported by purlins above. The planks, that run parallel to the walls, form a curved surface. The cross-section of each of these planks is shaped as a wedge; the narrow edge of the wedge fits into a groove cut into the wider edge of another plank to allow each plank to interlock with the next. The cross-section of these wedges reveal that they are radial cut to assure dimensional stability as expansion and contraction occurs.</p>
<p>Jelićka is a small village in the Timar region of the Bosnia krajina near the Gomionica River. A chapel existed in Jelićka early in the 19th century but this structure was constructed later in the century. The chapel was dedicated to the festival honoring the translation of the relics of Sveti (saint) Nikolas. This chapel was constructed of dressed oak timbers with interlocking joinery and has gone through a number of restoration projects. The bell tower was added during the time of Austro-Hungarian rule of the area.</p>
<p>The eave line of the tower obscures the head of the entry and the arched entry lintel. The lintel has one large rosette carved adjacent to where each jamb meets the head framing; the date of 1841 also carved within the lintel. The timber sill plate (base course) is documented as being approximately 37 cm (14.6 inches) in height.</p>
<p>The large oak sill members and the stepped interlocking joints reveal the massive size of these members. Along the north and south walls, the timber members were joined together, along the wall lengths, in order to assure that the course dimensions could be maintained. Matching cuts were used in these areas and iron hardware was installed to stabilize these joints. Upper interlocking members vary in height creating an interesting joint work texture.</p>
