Goodlife Makan Recreational Centre
Singapore

On an established housing estate, the pillared ground-floor entrance area of a 1970s block of flats was enclosed to form a community centre and dining hall for senior citizens who reside alone. It now houses a large well-equipped kitchen, a dining area, and an entertainment area. The front of the areas between the existing concrete pillars was filled with inviting full-height glass doors, and the interiors are painted bright colours or covered with lively graphics. Instead of living alone, the seniors are now able to meet and to plan, prepare, and enjoy their meals together, and to interact with each other and with the many student volunteers who help out.
