Baraka Slum Reconstruction
Dakar, Senegal

For 1,600 residents and refugees in an entirely reconstructed former slum in central Dakar, the project includes 210 apartments in eleven four-storey buildings; the walk-up units contain studio and one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments. Community facilities include a school and kindergarten, a community centre, retail facilities for 47 shops, a mosque, a dental clinic, and a vocational training centre; the site is provided with new infrastructure for water, electricity, sewerage, and roads, and landscaped open spaces. Concrete block is the principal construction material; much of the labour force included residents of the area. Income from a second phase for middle- and upper-income housing will pay for the now-completed first phase.
