Blaise Pascal Lycée Gymnasium
Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire

The gymnasium serves 1,500 students at a secondary school. The reinforced concrete ground floor contains student changing rooms, a teacher’s room, a smaller gymnasium, and a storage area; the upper steel structure contains a large gymnasium with seating for 200 spectators. Access to the upper floor is through six exterior concrete stairwells, three on either side of the building. The upper floor is clad in perforated metal sheets that temper sunlight and permit natural ventilation; the metal roof is surmounted by an elevated lantern that with open sides that enhances natural ventilation. Passive climate control, the use of local materials and construction techniques, and the creation of open and lively spaces conducive to sports events were principal design objectives.
