Mosque at Munirka (Mission for Indian History and Archaeology)New Delhi, India
1959-62 Survey
The building consists of a domed central chamber which is the main prayer room, and adjoining rooms to the north and south, each three bays long and one bay deep. The two bays nearest the main room are wide open on the east, while the bays at each end form a closed room. East of that again, an outside staircase leads to the roof. Some kind of building appears to have continued to the north and south, but now, because of the large amount of alteration that has occurred, and the press of private dwellings around, it is unclear what their original form was.
2015-18 Survey
This is in a crowded residential area in Munirka and could not be found in the 2015 survey. In 2018, a local Muslim named Mehboob Abbasi led us to the structure, where a cenotaph has been placed immediately below the central dome to create a shrine (but the cenotaph is turned 90 degrees relative to a Muslim cenotaph). The two bays on the north side are used as a residence of two adjoining rooms. The steps on the east side of the north edge lead to the rooftop. The two bays on the south had dwellings constructed above them and could not be seen.
(Paragraphs 2-4 from the 2015-18 Survey translated with Google Translate)
[Plan] It consists of a central walled dome room and side rooms, and the two side rooms consist of two open bays to the east and closed rooms at the ends, with stairs to the roof attached at both ends. According to the Monuments of Delhi, the central dome room is 7.3m square, the wings are 11.3m north to south and 4.5m east to west, and there is a 10m x 4.5m building to the south of the mosque, and the south gate of the mosque was nearby.
[Exterior] The walled dome room has a rectangular protrusion in the center of the east side, with an arch opening inside it. A crown ornament is placed around an octagonal drum and the dome is topped by a dome. The side room has two columns on the east side, two corbels at both ends and every bay, and has eaves. The walls of the walled dome room and side room are roughly the same height, so the crown ornament cannot be seen.
[Interior] The walled dome room is led into the octagon by a squinch arch, but the span of the diagonal arch is much wider than that of the central arch. The arches on the north and south sides of the walled dome room are currently closed, but continue to the side room. The side room has a cross vault.
