Fort al-Rawiyah

Al-Rawiyah Fort is a mid-17th century small fort built by the Portuguese is in the Tuyan Quarter approximately a kilometer into al-Wadi al-Kabeer from Old Muscat. It was constructed to protect the water supply of Muscat during the advancement of Imam Sultan b.Sayf al- Ya’rubi, hence its name, al-rāwīyah, meaning irrigation. Originally, it was a three-story structure surrounded by gardens, in which a cistern and well were located. After the Portuguese were ousted from the port city, the fort was renovated by Sultan b. Ahmed. In the 1970s, the Ministry of National Heritage and Culture restored the fort. Today, it is a two-story fort surrounded by urban development.
