Beit Muzna Restoration
Muscat, Oman

The 18th century mechant's house, Bait Muzna, also comprises two similar and adjoining Arab houses and was included as part of an ambitious government plan to restore historic buildings. The building was in an advanced state of decay and ruin. The architect's technical work responds to this ethic of restoration as a process, and maintaining the authenticity of materials and structure the approach adopted was a step by step process comprising:

1. meticulous inspection of the existant structure;
2. analysis of structural weaknesses;
3. fortification of decayed elements, with original materials;
4. analysis of existant structure to determine exact composition of original materials; and
5. reconstruction, if necessary, of destroyed sections, using both original materials and techniques.
