Baldia Soakpit Pilot Project
Karachi, Pakistan

The project started in 1979 with the aim to eliminate a major cause of disease in low-income areas: unsanitary condtions. The project comprises building of disposal pits for human waste in slum and squatter settlements, in order to improve sanitary and hygienic conditions. In all, 5000 pits have been constructed serving over one million people.
