An expansion and updating of Mali's national museum. The extension is conceived in the same spirit as the original museum buildings of 1981. Its curved forms are inspired by traditional architecture. But in place of stabilised earth walls, it has a double-layered wall construction that promotes natural ventilation. Some walls are of native stone, others have a hand-crafted clay finish. The ceilings are reinforced concrete slab. The exhibition galleries are climatised, to bring them up to international museum standards.
