Mosque, Cultural Centre and Gardens

Granada, Spain

The new mosque in Granada has exceptional symbolic importance, as the first mosque to be built in Spain by native Muslims since 1492. Strict guidelines governed its design, as it lies within a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its form is 'classic Andalusian' and its interiors incorporate traditional crafts (tilework, wood carving, wood inlay). At the same time it is a 'proactive institution': together with the attached cultural centre it is dedicated to 'interacting with Spanish and European society' through exhibitions, conferences, guided tours, workshops and occasional concerts.
