The semi-nomadic population of Maymand spend their summers in the high pastures, tending their flocks, and their winters in the village, in troglodyte dwellings that have been occupied for more than 2'000 years. This project balances the preservation of both the dwellings and the villagers' way of life with the installation of modern services and the influx of tourism. It has involved updating local handicrafts, helping young people to acquire new skills and documenting the structures. The trappings of modern life - from septic tanks to electricity cables and computers - have been incorporated into the original fabric as unobtrusively as possible.
