A semi-open cafeteria and an enclosed, air-conditioned contemporary art gallery are placed around a landscaped court, to create a meeting place and cultural hub for the students of the Jamia University in New Delhi. The architects, known for their use of contemporary architectural language, have designed a project that stands apart from the colonial styles and ‘Muslim’ ornamentation that characterised the older buildings on campus. The materials were chosen to express the building’s contemporary identity: steel and stone for the cafeteria, and concrete and glass (with metal louvers to modulate the light) in the gallery space.
