Conceived as the lungs of Islamabad, this is the first park in the city that is open to all strata of society. It is 90% green and fully pedestrianised, with cars limited to zones at the entrance. There are few built elements and these are subservient to the landscape, faced in ‘dry pack’ local stone to revive a traditional technique and to give them coherence. Efficient watering systems, natural materials and appropriate planting have been specified to limit maintenance and ensure the park improves with age. Features as diverse as sporting facilities, an outdoor theatre and gazebos are conceived to offer respite from city life on a communal or personal level.
