Shuniy Rural Planning Project
Beijing, China
This is a pilot planning and design project which has found practical ways to achieve sustainable development in China’s rural villages. Extensive analysis of the existing situation and public participation in the whole process ensured political transparency. A principle of 'micro-spreading renewal' is used, whereby one by one each household is updated, enabling the original social fabric to be maintained. The project has numerous ecological, economic, aesthetic and social benefits including: pollution control, use of sustainable energy sources, growth boundary of construction to protect land, preservation of vernacular aesthetic, long-term village renewal and ongoing public participation.
