As a privately funded university, it was important that the JIIT provide maximum value for money. To this end, traditional materials have been combined with simple technology for energy efficiency and ease of maintenance: double exterior walls two feet apart reduce temperatures and allow access to pipes housed in the interstice; carefully placed terracotta screens and an overhanging parasol roof bathe the buildings in shade. Bricks from local kilns and local skilled labour have also helped to keep costs low. Traffic is confined to a peripheral road, creating a vehicle-free campus where students can relax.
