Alila Villas Uluwatu
Bali, Indonesia

Guests at this ecologically sustainable hotel and villa development enjoy framed sea views as they descend from the entrance courtyard to the cliff-edge public pavilions. The latters’ design is inspired by 14th- and 15th-century Majapahit palaces and temples, as well as modern architecture including Carlo Scarpa’s stepped stonework and Mies van der Rohe’s courtyard houses. Villa-style garden guestrooms recalling local farmers’ houses of piled limestone boulders step up the hill behind, set among water gardens. Their roofs of Balinese pumice rock offer natural insulation and support ferns and succulents. All materials are locally sourced and sustainable. A nursery was used to propagate plants native to the site. The master plan respects the natural topography.
