Bras Basah Mass Rapid Transit Station
Singapore, Singapore

In designing Singapore’s deepest station, the architects were faced with two conflicting demands: its depth required a visual connection to the exterior to avoid an oppressive travel experience while the historic district and park location required it to disappear into the landscape. Their solution was to design the roof as an immense water-filled skylight. This both acts as a reflection pool, enhancing the symbolic importance of the surrounding historic buildings, and brings light and views deep into the ground. The circulating water carries away rising heat, releasing it over waterfall walls. Printed stickers use sunlight to project information about local cultural activities onto the canyon walls.
