The design of this new five-storey apartment building was restricted by budget, location and municipal regulations. The design focuses on the external facade and importance of privacy. A contemporary three-dimensional brick ‘mashrabiyya’ has been designed, mitigating sun glare and providing privacy and views out. Double glazed windows are provided in the facade openings. A method of construction was devised entitled ‘Method 23’, setting out how to construct 23 rows, 23 cut bricks, 23 boxes, similar to carpet-weaving instructions. The system was easy to understand by the inexperienced workforce. Me’mar magazine awarded the building its ‘best architectural achievement of the year’ award.
