Sustainability drove the design of this office. Fusing vernacular construction methods with modern technology, it works against the notion of bamboo as a ‘poor man’s material’. Its synergetic web structure, inspired by traditional fishing platforms, is more efficient than a vertical system due to bamboo’s high tensile and low compressive strength. The freeform roof of bamboo-fibre reinforced concrete required no formwork, being poured on wire mesh and bamboo splits. Walls are of compressed-earth blocks made on site. The building’s orientation and roof form allow full natural lighting during the day and natural ventilation. All required energy is generated from solar power, and water conservation measures have been implemented.
