Downtown Jebel Ali Shade Structure
Dubai, United Arab Emirates

The plaza shade structure and two roof-top garden shade structures - one orange and one blue - are part of a series of amenities located within the plaza. The project has created a shade mechanism combining ancient Arabic ornamentation with basic heat-absorption strategies. By using Islamic calligraphy, the square Kufic script as a reference, a new contemporary Islamic pattern has been created. Replicated shade structures create a people-friendly micro-climate within the plaza used for events and exhibitions. Canopies are composed of modular coloured parasols which evoke local mosaic and carpet design. Rooftop structures provide shaded seating areas where people can gather for meetings and parties.
