Habib Gorgi Sculpture Museum Restoration
Giza, Egypt

Built in 1972, the Museum, housing the works of students of Gorgi, gave a unique expression to the architecture of vaults and domes, alcoves and oculi, mud-brick tributes to Hassan Fathy. The building struggled with rising ground-water levels, and in 2005 walls collapsed. The challenge was to rebuild the museum as an artefact in its entirety. Failed walls were removed and reconstructed, failing walls were supported with beams and buttresses, a new support system constructed for the central dome, and a new space created for Gorgi’s watercolours. The wall base was waterproofed and underpinned for the entire complex.
