Erbil Citadel, a World Heritage site, is amongst the oldest inhabited cities in the world. In 2007, the Kurdistan Regional Government established the High Commission for Erbil Citadel Revitalization (HCECR) to preserve and restore the citadel with the help of UNESCO. In order to ensure the visual dominance of the citadel over its surroundings HCECR has establishmed of a zone extending up to 300-400 meters from the citadel in which building height should be restricted to approximately 10 meters. The first restoration works have been carried out since June 2010 and a number of houses have been restored and have new public uses.
